Well, I’ve made it back to work for two days now- the first day I had to get started at 5:45am to get everyone fed, dressed and out the door, but we did it! It took me three trips to get all my doctor junk, breastpump, milk, kids, lunch etc. to the car!
I have mixed feelings about being back at work- I really miss the kids and I think it will take a little time to get back in the swing of things at the office, but everyone was so happy to see me. I felt very valued and appreciated and it gave me the energy to get through the day.
The baby is doing ok with his transition- he seems happy at the daycare, and clearly likes the kids and his babysitter but isn’t crazy about his bottle. That is my fault, he is so sweet to nurse, we didn’t practice the bottle very much. Today he didn’t eat anything until almost 5pm and then sucked down almost 12oz at once! That’s my boy!
Back to work tomorrow, wish me luck as we continue to get the hang of this!
So I’m in the locker room at the YMCA, recovering from my first post-baby gym trip and getting ready to take a shower when I hear a mom say “Well, I thought my baby was big until I saw Dr. Bullen’s new baby. Now that’s a big baby!”
Can you feel my heart swelling with pride?! Arlo, they are already discussing you in the girl’s locker room and we have years (thank god) before puberty! After having such a tiny guy with Zach, it is so much fun to have a big hefty boy. The only thing that is complaining is my shoulders…
I feel like I haven’t written much about the baby. Zach is so boisterous and overwhelming, little Arlo takes a side seat sometimes to his brother’s chaos. But he is such a sweet baby and he really deserves his own entry.
Arlo in the sling I made for him
Arlo seems a little more serious than I remember Zach being at this age- it takes a little more to make him smile, but once he does his entire face lights up. He loves to be in the middle of the action and nothing makes him happier than watching his family. He has pretty simple tastes right now- feed me, hold me, change me and sleep me. And he is so big and strong (95% for his weight! I know I’m not supposed to be proud of that, it isn’t like it is a test grade or something, but nothing makes a mamma prouder that a big, strong baby!) If I had to guess what his personality will be like, I would say that he will be mellow and sweet, a dreamer but serious too.
Arlo has my eyes and Daddy’s hairdo
He had his first day at daycare today- he took a few naps, loved watching the big kids and wasn’t crazy about the bottle. It was a good thing mom stopped by to give him lunch or he would have been one cranky baby!
Pushing this blasted thing is really great exercise!
And now, just as the baby is starting to sleep better and be more interesting, I have to go back to work. Doesn’t seem fair. Especially now that I have gotten used to being “just Mom” it seems a little daunting to add another dimension to our lives. So I will enjoy my last few days home with the boys… and wish me luck at 7:30 Monday morning when I have to stuff two kids, my breast pump, stethoscope (wonder where that is?), and milk for the baby into the car and head off to work!
Oh, and one other thing. All that bedrest, remember that? It was worth it. Every second. Because this kid is a keeper.
Zach is soooo close to being able to sing the ABC’s. He was doing great yesterday, so my Mom and I tried to record it and of course he turned from precocious child into total spaz. I should explain on thing first though… when Joe was little, he and his sister ended the song by hitting their forehead and saying “Now I know my ABC’s. Next time stick an apple in my forehead”. Well Joe has been teaching Zach his version and here is the result…
Did you notice poor Arlo at the end? Poor baby, look at the chaos he has the nurse through! I think my next post will be “Ode to the Back of Arlo’s Head”. Between nursing and being in a sling or front pack, we have more pictures of the back of his head than his face! We’ll work on that, little one, especially since you have such a cute face.
Ok- this started out as a really cute moment with Zach asking to hold the baby. In the time it took me to pick up the camera this is what it morphed into:
“Mama! Dat Baby no have teeth!”
Ahhh, such a tender loving moment! If Arlo ever swallows a foreign body, I’ll know exactly who to summon to extract it!
My Dad and Rose were here the past few days- we had a great time and tuckered out a certain toddler (and two Grandparents!) with “real big special bye-byes”. Today we went to Salt Creek to look at the tide pools. Salt Creek is one of the last places I ever went with my sister. She found a tide pool carved out of rock and spent almost an hour lying on the rock and staring into it. We found it again today- complete with all the creatures, but couldn’t get Zach to be interested. Maybe I should have let him lay down on the rocks like she did so he could see the pool better.
Zach is just the right age to get a kick out of Grandparents. He knows they bring presents, extra attention and special outings. He really has a bond with them even though we don’t see grandparents very often.
My mother-in-law was here a few weeks ago and we also had a great time. Fran introduced Zach to dinosaurs and I don’t think life will be the same again. I had to go to the library this week and check out a few dinosaur books because Zach was asking me all these dinosaur questions I couldn’t answer.
My Mom is here next week and then Joe’s Dad arrives the day my mom leaves! We’ll try to have a calm few days here and then gear up again for all the extra love, attention and “real big special bye-byes” with the next set of grandparents!
