We have a granola problem at out house.  Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack- the only thing Zach says he wants to eat is granola.  In his big blue bowl, with his sharp-teeth spoon (grapefruit spoon) and two blue cups of soy milk.  Ahhhh, toddlers and their rituals.  I have been trying so hard the last few days to cut back on the “nola”.  The following sentence actually came out of my mouth this weekend- “You can’t have any granola until you finish your fish sticks.”  What kind of parent forces their child to eat processed disgusting fish instead of a healthy bowl of granola?!  I think living with a toddler warps your brain.

Bottoms up!

The baby, on the other hand, we can already tell is going to be a fantastic eater.  He’ll be five months soon and he is just desperate to get his hands on some real food.  I tried some rice cereal a few nights ago, which he wasn’t crazy about, but gave him some of Zach’s pumpkin-banana smoothie last night and he just gobbled that up!  Not what the pediatrician would recommend for a first food, but hey- we followed the “rules” with Zach and look where that got us!

Arlo in his Bouncer

We treated ourselves to a day in Victoria today.   Joe and I have been pretty overwhelmed with work, the house and life in general lately, so we decided to escape today.  Actually, Joe had to really talk me into it.  It is just so hard to get out of the house, but I am so glad we did.

Zach and Joe on the Ferry

Zach loved the ferry, and except for a few minor incidents, did great the entire day, even without a nap!  We took him to the Royal BC Museum and to his first movie ever in a theater- IMAX Dinosaurs.  That will be hard to top!

And or course, little Arlo (not so little actually, he weighs almost 19lbs) did great.  He is such a trooper.  He slept through the entire movie (which was so loud) and was happy in his pack and the stroller the rest of the day.  Thanks, little guy!

And thanks Joe, for getting me out of the house, out of the country, away from laundry, dishes, and cooking to have just a wonderful day with my family (except that part about Zach biting me on the ferry and screaming “You real bad mommy!  Me need space!” That I could have done without…).  I love you.

I watched the sun rise this morning.  The sky went from dark, to pink and then blue.   There is new snow in the mountains and the lake reflects all this beauty.  It is only one day after Obama was elected, and already I can feel the earth healing.  I feel so lucky to be a part of these momentous times.

Whoever invented daylight savings time did not have small children.

As promised- here are out Halloween pictures- Arlo was a little pumpkin and Zach was an astronaut.  Joe took Zach downtown to trick-or-treat- luckily Zach wasn’t that into it, so he didn’t bring a huge thing of candy home for me to eat!

Costumes were pretty easy this year- the astronaut costume is from Zach’s cousins and the pumpkin is from (I’m embarrased to say) Sprawlmart.  Next year I hope to have the energy to make some costumes.  My mom always sewed ours and we loved them.  Anyone have a pattern for a dinosaur costume?  I have a feeling that is what Zach will want to be!
